"Bingo for the Playstation Generation"; 21st Century bingo with it's coffee shop concessions, bright lights, electronic gaming and breakfast menus.
Despite the new image, bingo clubs face considerable difficulties; the competition from online gaming, heavy taxation, new and complex licensing procedures and the impact of the smoking ban (nearly half of regular players are
smokers) led to 43 clubs closing in 2007-2008. Perceived to be a socially acceptable form of gambling, bingo has provided a social and community function for players, primarily for women who have traditionally considered it a safe and comfortable environment. This world, in which generations of families (whose communal gaming history is often older than the building in which they play) socialise and play together, is becoming more commercialised as the bingo club struggles to survive in an increasingly competitive industry.
